ARKADY TSISSEREV AWARDED HONOURARY CFAA LIFE MEMBERSHIP!
New Westminster, British Columbia - April 15th, 2015 marked a very special day in Ark Tsisserev’s life. Ark presented on two topics at the CFAA BC Chapter’s Technical Seminar: the new life safety systems integrated commissioning requirements (Sentence 3.2.4.6 of BCBC 2012) and CAN/ULC-S561 (Standard for Installation and Services for Fire Signal Receiving Centres and Systems).
As he was wrapping up on the latter topic, he was asked to remain on stage for a special award that turned out to be an honourary Life Membership in the Canadian Fire Alarm Association presented by Steve Clemens (CFAA Executive Director) and Erick Gagne (National Vice President).
Ark’s contributions to the safety of Canadians goes way back. He is recognized nationally as our “Guru” of electrical and life safety. We are, in fact, doubly blessed, here in Vancouver, to have his expertise so readily available. Congratulations, Ark, on your remarkable career and achievements, and our best wishes for a long, healthy, and equally stellar future!
Other guest speakers included Victor Smart, Gord Morrison, Costa Vlachias, Chris Sterling, Mark Smitton, and yours truly. Scintillating conversation, a delicious lunch and brain stirring presentations pretty well sums up another BC Chapter success! See you all next year!
ECABC SPONSORS FIRE ALARM TECH TALK!
Burnaby, British Columbia - On Wednesday, April 29th, I had the priveledge of presenting at an ECABC Tech Talk. About 70 people attended (from electricians to engineers) - although it was heavily weighted towards the former. The discussion touched on a number of issues: the changes in the Building Code and Vancouver Building Bylaw, installation requirements for manual stations, insuite signalling appliances, isololators and end-of-line resistors, class “A” circuit requirements, Data Communication Loops (DCL), communicators, and the preparation work and documentation required for the Verification and the Commissioning. And the pizza was delicious, too!

ONTARIO’S ELECTRICAL SAFETY AUTHORITY IS LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN (AND WOMEN)!
Mississauga, Ontario - The Electrical Safety Authority is looking for some passionate, knowledgeable individuals to serve on their Consumer Advisory Council. If you live in Ontario, and wish to contribute positively to the safety of it’s citizens, then please visit:
I came “this close” to moving to Toronto a couple of years ago, too. Drat!
ARE SUBSTANDARD INSPECTIONS BECOMING THE NEW BC STANDARD?
Port Coquitlam, British Columbia - It would be safe for me to say that it no longer really surprises me that I frequently stumble across buildings (during the course of a routine Verification usually involving a tenant improvement, or a service call), that have been inadequately tested by their fire protection
equipment service provider. What makes this one notable, however, has really nothing to do with the BOGUS inspection, but more with the company behind it. It also now happens to be the subject of a full blown complaint filed with ASTTBC’s Compliance Office, but that’s going to prove to be a rather sticky wicket (as you will soon discover).
The building is brand new (just over a year old) and comprises a four storey walk-up with thirty suites. My company happened to supply the fire alarm system and I was directly involved in the Verification. This makes me VERY familiar with not only the system, but the building’s layout as well.
TRAGIC HOME FIRE IN TORONTO CAUSED BY UNATTENDED COOKING!
Toronto, Ontario - The March 28th house fire that killed one small child on Kingston Road in Toronto has been confirmed as having been caused by an unattended cooking accident.
According to the press release from the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management:
“Preliminary findings indicated the fire originated in the kitchen, on the stove. The fire developed within the confines of the kitchen, and then extended up the staircase to the second floor -- trapping the victims on the second floor and blocking their escape down the stairs.”
Five other family members were injured but managed to miraculously escape the flames.
